Athar : Cairo monuments

 > Lire en Français

This program won the call for projects BSN5. Lead in cooperation with Persée (UMS-3602) and Institut Français d’ Archéologie Orientale (French Institute of Oriental Archaeology) this project aims to digitalize and make available in June 2016 the whole/entire works of the Comité de conservation des monuments de l’art arabe (1882-1953) (committee of conservation of Arabic art)  enriched by a TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) toponymic indexation.

Based on the reports from Commission des monuments  historiques en France (French historical monuments commission) this yearly publication was linked to the work of a committee created in Cairo in 1881 in order to inventory, describe and restore Islamic and Coptic monuments of Egypt.

The processing of these type of documents bring up some difficulties because of multiples variations of transliterated Arabic toponyms

With the TEI encoding Module developed by the Persée team, InVisu unit will be in charge of the indexation of these toponyms linked with its Cairo monuments gazetteer.

Through the exploitation of this corpus, which is currently an incomplete collection disseminated in various Europeans libraries; the goal is to set up, enrich and diffuse  identification and indexation tools for Cairo monuments, which are crucial to enhance many textual and iconographic collections.
